What is Alzheimer's disease?

Alzheimer's disease is a progressive brain disorder that affects memory, thinking, and behaviour. Alzheimer disease involves parts of the brain that controls memory, thinking and reasoning, making judgements and decisions, and distinct changes in personality and behaviour. While the exact cause of Alzheimer's disease is still unknown, it is believed to be a combination of genetic, lifestyle, and environmental factors.

The first sign of Alzeimer’s

Microscopic changes in the brain cells are seen much before the onset of memory loss. Your brain has about 100 million neurons or brain cells. Each nerve of your brain connects with others to form a network or a cluster of cells that carry thinking and learning, while others aid our ability to see, hear, and smell.

Studies have been conducted on people living in nursing homes to find out what is Alzheimer's disease. It was noticed that most of them had tangles and plaques in their brains. These abnormal structures are responsible for killing the brain cells might cause.

  • Plaques-
Plaques are beta-amyloid deposits, often known as plaques, that accumulate in the gaps between nerve cells..
  • Tangles-
Tangles are twisted tau protein fibers that accumulate inside cells. Though it is seen that as people age, they automatically start developing these structures, however, the person with Alzheimer tends to develop it more, especially in the area linked to memory. These abnormal structures are responsible for blocking communication among the nerve cells leading to the perpetual destruction and death of nerve cells that results in memory problems and problems in carrying out daily activities.

Alzheimer’s disease symptoms

At Vardaan Centre, special home care for Alzheimer's patients is given priority. The prime Alzheimer's disease symptom is the inability of a person to remember recent memory. The medically challenged seniors who come to us usually have the following symptoms:

  • This includes difficulty in remembering general information.
  • This is one of the early symptoms of alzheimer disease.

  • Finding it difficult to finish tasks on time

3. Behavioural changes

  • Experiencing mood changes or imbalances.
  • Becoming compulsive or obsessive
  • Losing interest or motivation

4. Difficulty speaking, walking and swallowing

  • A person might lose the ability to speak, walk, or swallow properly in the later stages of this condition
  • The person suffering from the condition may find it difficult to spell, write, or communicate.

5. Losing precious objects

  • Repeating the same questions and the inability to understand the most basic things
  • Forgetting any scheduled appointment or important events
  • Losing sight of the way or wandering alone

The different stages of Alzheimer's disease

Alzheimer’s is a progressive brain illness that worsens over time. The most distinguishable sign is the bouts of losing memory for short periods. The different stages of Alzheimer's include:-

  • Mild Stage
This is typically when the individual begins to have memory and cognitive impairments. They begin to take longer to do daily chores or have difficulties handling or making payments.
  • Moderate stage
This is the stage at which the person begins to lose memory and becomes confused. They can't recognise their friends and relatives and are unable to learn new things.
  • Severe stage
This is the stage when the person's neurons get tangled, preventing them from communicating and leaving them utterly immobile. A person with Alzheimer's disease lives 4 to 8 years following diagnosis on average but can survive up to 20 years depending on other circumstances.

Vardaan Health Care is the best center for Alzheimer's Treatment In India that remains equipped to take holistic care of our beloved seniors with personalised Medicare and comfort them with the warmth and affection they deserve.

Factors that increase the risk of Alzheimer’s disease

  • Age
According to the Alzheimer's Association, 1 out of 9 people over the age of 65 and 1 in 3 people over the age of 85 globally have Alzheimer's. Alzheimer’s is not a part of ageing but usually develops in people who are in their 60s or further.
  • Genes
Genetic mutations are becoming increasingly important in understanding Alzheimer's disease development, both late-onset and early-onset. Early-onset Alzheimer's, for example, in which symptoms appear in a person's 30s, 40s, or 50s, is caused by genetic abnormalities in one of three genes inherited from a parent. Carrying the APOE-e4 gene considerably raises your risk.
  • Family history
This condition often runs in family lines. Any of your family members having the conditions increases the risk of you inheriting the same.
  • Heart conditions
Conditions such as diabetes and heart disorders such as high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and high cholesterol, may raise your chance of Alzheimer's disease.
  • Head trauma
Trauma to the head, according to the Alzheimer's Association, is directly connected with an elevated risk of the illness later in life. People who have suffered major head injuries are more likely to show more symptoms of alzheimer. Their risk increases if the injury involves loss of consciousness or occurs frequently, as in sports or the military. It is recommended that you use helmets, seat belts, and "fall-proof" your home to reduce your risk of suffering a brain injury.
  • Smoking
According to some statistics from the World Health Organization, smoking is directly linked with an increased risk of developing dementia.
  • Obesity
A lack of activity or being overweight can be the most possible Alzheimer's cause. A BMI of more than 30 increases your risk threefold. If you exercise at least twice a week, you may reduce your risks of developing Alzheimer's disease in your later years. Simply regulating your lifestyle, food, exercise, and social activities, and engaging your mind in new hobbies and learning has been linked to a lower risk of Alzheimer's.

Treating Alzheimer Disease Symptoms can help patients maintain their comfort, dignity, and independence for a longer period. Galantamine, rivastigmine, and donepezil are cholinesterase inhibitors used to treat mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease symptoms. Some cognitive and behavioural symptoms may be reduced or controlled by these medications. Memantine, an N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) antagonist, can be given to treat mild to severe Alzheimer's disease.

How Can We Help?

Our mission is to provide care for alzheimer’s patients and Alzheimer's disease treatments so that senior citizens can get accurate, up-to-date information, compassionate support, and comprehensive resources to help them navigate this journey.

Vardaan Senior Citizen Centre

Our Alzheimer’s assisted living includes residential facilities with medical support and entertainment for senior citizens. Our centre is one of its kind which provides care for medically dependent seniors within the premises of an operational medical institution, Vardaan Hospital. It is a home for seniors away from home with all the required facilities available under one roof. It has rooms which are senior-friendly and has a dedicated and caring staff.

Personalized Care and Monitoring

We recognize the critical role that caregivers play in the lives of individuals with Alzheimer's disease, that is why we look up to caring for alzheimer's patients in a nursing home at Vardaan. Fear for their loved one's safety is one of the primary reasons that many families choose to place their loved one in an Alzheimer's care home. Alzheimer's patients are prone to straying away from home and becoming disoriented. Our staff can always keep an eye on a patient's movements. We help our senior citizens to explore lifestyle factors that may reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease or help manage its symptoms, such as engaging in regular physical exercise, maintaining a healthy diet, and stimulating cognitive activities.

Our Community and Support

At Vardaan Health Care, we believe that no one should face Alzheimer's disease alone. Our nursing care for Alzheimer’s disease is a community where individuals and families can connect, share their experiences, and offer support to one another.
